Media students were given a real taste of life in the creative industries during this year’s Media JAM Careers Week 2nd-6th March - a packed programme filled with inspiration, industry insights and invaluable career advice.
Throughout the week, students heard from an exciting line-up of 14 industry professionals, spanning every corner of the creative sector. Writers, gamers, videographers, marketing specialists, BBC producers and presenters, journalists and a wide range of creative freelancers all shared their journeys, challenges and successes.
Among the standout sessions were talks from BBC Producer and Presenter Sophie Wheeldon and BBC Journalist Corazon Garcia, who offered a behind-the-scenes look at breaking stories, building a portfolio and thriving in fast-paced media environments.
Students also heard from creatives at the heart of Nottingham’s vibrant cultural scene. Local rapper and online sensation Jahdigger delivered a lively and honest session on building a personal brand, staying consistent and kick-starting a career in the digital age.
The week brought together guests at every stage of their professional journey - from emerging freelancers to established names with decades of experience. Each one brought something unique: insights into industry trends, practical tips for getting started, and personal stories that resonated deeply with students preparing for their next steps.
Crucially, the sessions highlighted that the creative industries aren’t shaped solely by large organisations. Freelancers, entrepreneurs and small business owners play a vital role in driving innovation and expanding opportunities. Hearing directly from these voices offered students a realistic, empowering view of the sector - showing them that there are countless paths to success.
