At Nottingham College, we’re proud to offer the Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship. This unique course blends classroom learning with real-world experience, allowing students to continue working in their healthcare roles while gaining valuable qualifications. We spoke to some of our students to find out what they think about the course and why it works so well for them.

Balancing Learning with Real-World Experience

Q: How do you find the balance between studying and working?

Jamie: "I think the best part of this apprenticeship is that you get clinical experience while you're learning in the classroom. It’s so much easier than doing full-time study without working. You get to apply what you’re learning right away, which makes everything feel more relevant."

Q: How does this work help you grow professionally?

Athena: "I’ve definitely gained a lot of confidence. It’s been great because I’m learning new skills that I can apply directly to my role. I feel like I’ve grown both personally and professionally, which is really rewarding."

Building Confidence and Personal Growth

Q: How has the apprenticeship affected your confidence in your role?

Athena: "It’s been fantastic for my confidence. The combination of practical experience and the classroom support has helped me feel more capable and empowered. I’m taking on more responsibilities and feel more confident in my decisions."

Q: Do you think the apprenticeship has helped you develop your skills?

Sylvia: "Absolutely. I’m researching how to support patients during radiotherapy, which is something I’m really passionate about. I’m nervous about presenting my research, but the preparation and support I’ve received have been really helpful. It’s been great to see how much I’ve developed."

Working on Meaningful Projects

Q: What projects have you been working on?

Sylvia: "I’m looking at how we can better support patients who are dealing with anxiety during their radiotherapy treatments. It’s my first time presenting research, and while it’s nerve-wracking, it’s been a great learning experience. The course really prepares you for these projects, and it’s exciting to know it’s making a difference."

Support and Guidance Every Step of the Way

Q: How would you describe the support you’ve received from your tutors?

Athena: "The support has been amazing. Our tutor is always available, whether it’s to help with assignments or to give advice on projects. No matter what, I always feel like I have someone to turn to when I need help."

Q: How does this level of support help you succeed?

Jamie: "It makes a big difference. Whenever I have questions or challenges, I know I can reach out, and I’ll get a helpful, supportive response. It really boosts your confidence when you know you’re not in it alone."

Recognition and Career Advancement

Q: Do you feel more valued by your team since starting the apprenticeship?

Sylvia: "Definitely. I feel like I’m being treated differently now. The course has given me new qualifications and skills, and my team really recognises that. I feel more respected and valued, which is a great feeling."

Earning While Learning

Q: How has the apprenticeship helped you financially?

Jamie: "Being able to study while still getting paid is a huge benefit. It’s the best of both worlds. I don’t have to worry about taking time off work or finding a way to support myself while I’m studying."

If you’re considering the apprenticeship, why not head to our next apprenticeship open evening on 11th February 2025 at our City Hub campus. Our friendly team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and provide more information about the apprenticeship experience.
