The UK Government has announced further changes to T Levels, giving employers and providers greater flexibility in how industry placements are delivered.

Under updated guidance, students can now complete 100% of their T Level industry placement remotely, and placements can be split across multiple employers without restriction.

These changes aim to make it easier for more organisations to get involved and to help colleges overcome ongoing challenges in sourcing placements.

Why this change has been introduced

Industry placements are a core part of T Levels, requiring students to complete at least 315 hours of workplace experience.

However, many employers have previously found it difficult to offer placements due to:

  • Limited capacity or physical workspace
  • Location constraints
  • Health, safety, or supervision requirements

The new rules remove these barriers by:

  • Allowing placements to take place entirely remotely
  • Removing limits on the number of employers involved
  • Providing greater flexibility in how hours are delivered

This reflects modern working patterns, including the rise of hybrid and remote roles.

For employers, this is an opportunity to engage with T Levels in a more flexible and manageable way.

You can now offer remote placements without needing office space and contribute to placements alongside other organisations. These changes allow employers to support students through project-based or digital work, rather than the traditional hands-on approach to work placement.

This opens the door for more SMEs and organisations without traditional office environments to get involved. While flexibility has increased, the purpose of T Level placements remains the same: to give students meaningful, high-quality work experience.

Employers should consider:

  • Providing structured tasks and clear objectives
  • Ensuring regular interaction and supervision
  • Offering insight into real workplace practices

Even in a remote setting, maintaining quality is key to ensuring students gain valuable skills.

At Nottingham College, we work closely with employers to make engagement with T Levels simple and effective.

We can help you design flexible placement models that work for your business, identifying opportunities for remote or hybrid placements. This ensures placements meet quality and compliance expectations, allowing both student and employer to benefit.
