Over the last few months employers have had to battle against the seemingly endless changes to the business landscape. From new government initiatives to the pressures from the cost of living crisis, ongoing post-Brexit challenges and Trump administration uncertainty – the waters have been choppy.
This week we’ve seen more changes, this time to the defunding of Level 7 apprenticeships for over 21s. As a post-graduate qualification, the reality is the vast majority of eligible learners in employment will now not be fundable through the levy, so we’ve been inundated with concerned calls from our partner businesses wondering where this leaves them with upskilling their workforce.
These Level 7 programmes have been invaluable for developing senior leaders, specialists, and professionals in sectors like nursing, accountancy and law. While they’re no longer levy-funded, they’re still available and we can help you explore alternative funding routes or integrate them into your wider learning and development strategy.
The alternative option now for employers is about prioritisation, and this is something we can also support you with consultatively. There are however also positives on the horizon which reflect a different direction and focus from our government.
For employers which are ready to invest time, energy and resources into the next generation of talent, this Level 7 defunding may be in some ways redressed by the introduction of Level 2 and 3 foundation apprenticeships.
We’re talking about a completely different training offer here but it’s a clear signal from the government that they are refocusing efforts on getting more young people into work, reducing the number of NEETs (young people not in education, employment or training) and plugging critical skills gaps in sectors like healthcare, construction, engineering and social care.
So, what does this mean for employers like you?
Ultimately, there’s an opportunity now to change your approach to recruitment and training. These new Level 2 and 3 foundation apprenticeships are designed to bring fresh talent into your business, particularly young people who are practical, hands-on learners and may have struggled in more traditional academic routes.
Technology is evolving, industries are changing and the demand for skilled people is only growing. AI might be transforming production lines, but we still need people to service, maintain and operate. It’s the practical line of sight that AI will never replace, and apprenticeships, at every level, are key to making that happen.
So, let’s not see this as a setback. Let’s see it as a chance to refocus and invest in the future.
At Nottingham College, we’re ready to partner with you to make the most of these changes, whether that’s through tailored advice, recruitment support or helping you maximise your levy spend.
