A BTEC (short for Business and Technology Education Council) is a vocational qualification, which means it’s more focused on practical, hands-on learning than traditional academic routes like A levels.

Think less sitting in exams, more real-world projects, coursework and building useful skills in things like business, health and social care, engineering, IT, media, sport and more.

What makes a BTEC different?

One of the biggest differences is the style of learning. BTECs are much more focused on coursework and practical tasks and are assessed in units throughout the year. They can also be more career-focused, helping you get into fields like health and social care, construction or business.

What levels are there?

BTEC Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE grades 1–3 (the old D–G grades). It’s a great option if you didn’t get many GCSEs or just want to build up your confidence before moving on to the next level. Level 1 focuses on basic skills and knowledge in a subject and giving you a solid foundation to progress from.

BTEC Level 2 is the next step up and is equivalent to GCSE grades 4–9 (the old A*–C grades). It’s ideal if you want something more hands-on after Year 11 or if you’re not quite ready to jump into Level 3 just yet. Completing a Level 2 BTEC can lead straight into an apprenticeship or allow you to move up to Level 3.

BTEC Level 3 is equivalent to three A Levels and can lead you to university, apprenticeships, or even straight into the world of work.

Can I go to uni with a BTEC?

Yes! Loads of students get into university with BTEC Level 3 qualifications — especially if you go for the Extended Diploma.

That said, some super-competitive courses (like medicine or top Russell Group unis) might prefer A-levels or want a mix of BTECs and A Levels. So, if uni is part of your plan, it’s worth double-checking the entry requirements.
