Read about how our students put their course skills to practice by assisting Headway’s service users in making bird boxes.

Some of our Construction students have been working with Headway – the brain injury association. They have been supporting a group of service users to create birdboxes they can take home!

Headway Nottingham is a small local charity that offer support, friendship, and information to people that have had brain injuries and are now living with a disability in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Students assisted the group by teaching and overseeing using hand tools such as drills, to assemble the birdboxes. On a separate visit users finished off the project by painting the birdboxes before being able to take them home.

This opportunity benefitted both groups. It allowed them to practice and expand their communication skills as they adapted to working with new people they may not typically encounter, with our students giving instructions and passing on their knowledge to service users who are less experienced in this field.

The project also allowed our students to see the versatility of the skills they learned in college, and it broadened their perspectives on how these skills can be applied across different industries.
